Pandemic Survival Tips for Wanderlusters

If you’re a wanderluster like me, one of the hardest things about the pandemic is the travel ban. Low key, I’ve had to actively find ways to cope with the reality that we would not be able to travel for the year. I consider travel as part of my therapy and essential for my mental wellbeing. I had to cancel 5 (yes… 5) flights. Was super bummed about it but it is what it is. Stay strong, my dudes. If you’ve had to cancel big trips or events, here are some tips on how to stay sane:

1) Staycations — You’d be surprised at how many hidden gems there are locally. Search for cool stays on AirBnB or use the time to get to know your hometown better. This is also a great chance for you to support local. I’ve gone to some pretty awesome staycations here in Austin. (Blog post coming soon about it!)

2) Go outside — There are countless studies that show that just being outside in nature improves your mental health. You could take a hike at a nearby park. Or you can simply just take a walk around your neighborhood. Even just 10 minutes of sunshine can do absolute wonders.

3) Find a hobby that is tactile — I took up boxing. I know, haha crazy right? I got a punching bag, looked up YouTube videos and have been learning there. I’ve gotten pretty good! Other options include: knitting, puzzles, gardening, baking etc.

4) Go on a road trip— There are so many safe, socially-distanced national parks that you could drive to. I suggest making a list of all the ones that are nearby and seeing if any of them pique your interest!

5) Create Find a creative outlet. For example, thanks to quarantine life, I’ve had time to create this website! Time passes by quickly when you have a project you are passionate about.

6) Be kind to yourself — You’ve got to remind yourself that we are in a middle of a pandemic. You are doing your best considering everything that is going on in the world. Whatever stress you’re feeling right now, it’s normal. Don’t feel bad if you aren’t as productive as you think you should be.
